Buying a new carpet is one of the biggest changes you can make to a room, and with hundreds of colours, piles and price points to choose from, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. This guide walks through the decisions that actually matter.
1. Start with the room, not the carpet
A hallway needs something very different from a bedroom. High-traffic areas like stairs, hallways and living rooms benefit from a dense twist or Berber loop pile that resists flattening and hides footmarks. Bedrooms can afford a deeper, softer Saxony pile since footfall is lighter.
2. Decide your budget per m², not per roll
Carpets are priced per square metre, and quality varies enormously — from around £8–£14/m² for hard-wearing budget ranges up to £30+/m² for deep-pile luxury Saxonys. Set a realistic budget per room before you fall in love with a sample.
3. Think about material
Polypropylene is the most popular fibre — affordable, stain-resistant and family-friendly. Wool-blend carpets (often 80% wool / 20% nylon) feel more luxurious and have excellent natural resilience, at a higher price point.
4. Never skip the underlay
A good underlay extends the life of your carpet, improves comfort underfoot and adds noise and thermal insulation. See our underlay guide for more detail.
5. Take samples home
Carpet colour can look completely different under your own lighting. Every range in our showroom is available as a free sample — take a few home and live with them for a day or two before deciding.
